1. When and how did you start working online as a freelancer?

I am working as a freelancer for almost 1 and a half years now, so basically I started working as a freelancer around year 2012. I started by just joining from Online Design contests from some Crowdsourcing sites, specifically I started joining at 99designs way back 2009, Just only for the sake of experience, past time and also at least to enhance my skills, but when I got my first win I realized that I should take this more seriously and pursue this job, And from there I started getting private clients and they are contacting me thru my portfolios in the crowdsourcing sites.

2. Do you have any background when you started applying for jobs?

Yes, I have. Drawing/Designing is my passion, this is what I love to do, so before I got into these Digital Media I used to join traditional Poster-Making Contests since I was in Elementary Level. Competing from different schools from Division Levels up to National Levels. My greatest achievement that time was winning the “Water District On the Spot Poster-Making Contest” National Level held in Cebu that was way back year 2000 when I was already in High School. Also that time different Schools specially in Davao del Sur hired us to do Mural Paintings together with my two elder brothers and this is the main reason why at a very young age I already learned how to earn and to support our studies with ourselves as my Father’s income is not enough to sustain our studies. So this is where I got my backgrounds, experiences, enhanced my skills about Designing stuff.

3. What are the biggest challenges you faced when dealing with clients from other countries?

When I started doing online Jobs the first challenge or maybe the biggest challenge I faced when dealing with clients from other countries is the communication in terms of Timings. You need to adopt the client’s time of availability so that they can chat with you online and discuss with you properly to the certain project even if it’s already very late or very early in the morning.

4. Perks in becoming an online freelancer.

Managing your own schedules is one of the best perks of being a freelancer. It is just up to you how you will negotiate to your client about the certain project. The deadline, the turn-arounds whether to accept the project or not.

5. Advice you can give for newbies.

Never stop practicing and exploring, always take time for it as this is also your investment to your knowledge and skills. Find ways to be inspired, always be inspired in order to be productive and creative. Don’t forget to take a rest and sleep.

Be like John and start working as an online freelance web designer without investment or startup fees.
