1. When and how did you start working online as a freelancer?

I’m working as a freelancer online since 2009 after went back from Dubai. Initially, I’m on a contest environment type of freelancing site like, Designcrowd, 99designs then I transferred to Odesk, which I’m a member since 2006 but not active due to lots of declined proposals from clients. I restore my account and try again my luck on Proposal based freelancing site (this is due to contest type is so crowded and I have bad experiences), I also joined Elance and landed my first Job and I remember, my first client told me that he will give me a chance (even there’s a lot of excellent bidder) and he thinks that I have potential to make more on Elance. On September 2012, I got more job project and start thinking to leave my normal 9-5 day job. I’m working as Senior Innovation Engineer in Electronics Company that time. Then on January 2013, I resigned and start to be a full time freelancer on Elance and Odesk…

2. Do you have any background when you started applying for jobs?

Yes. I build my talents, self learning, do research and study new things. So when doing proposals, I’m confident.

3. What are the biggest challenges you faced when dealing with clients from other countries?

The biggest challenge dealing with the clients is time difference specially on Elance/Odesk, there’s a lot of clients from USA and I need to assure them that I can still support and serve them regardless of time differences. Other challenges, some clients are hard to please with my work.

4. Perks in becoming an online freelancer.

More time with my Family, wife and kids. I’m a family oriented person and I want to spend more time with my family so Freelancing is the best way for me.

5. Advice you can give for newbies.

Be patient. First, build your portfolio and make the best of it, brag about your talent (just be honest), do not do job shopping (elance/odesk), apply for a job that fits your interest and talents. Don’t apply for a job that you can’t do. Be honest on every client. Be professional. Build excellent reputation.

Do research on making the best freelancer proposals. Ask other successful freelancer and get advice from them.

Be yourself, don’t give up. I see many people leave elance/odesk because they can’t get a job, I also experienced this but I continue to make proposals. And most important, Pray and ask for HIS guidance and blessings. God’s grace is enough and if you do best on freelancing everything will flow smoothly..
